Global Scaling of Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Trends & Future

The aviation industry stands at a critical juncture. As global travel rebounds to pre-pandemic levels, the pressure to decarbonize has never been greater. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has emerged as the most viable short-to-medium-term solution for reducing carbon emissions, offering a drop-in replacement for conventional jet fuel that requires minimal infrastructure changes. However, scaling production to meet ambitious net-zero targets by 2050 remains a complex challenge involving economic, technical, and regulatory hurdles.

Market analysis reveals a significant supply-demand gap. Currently, SAF accounts for less than 1% of global jet fuel consumption. Projections indicate that demand could reach 65 billion liters by 2030, driven primarily by mandates in the European Union and the United States. Yet, supply is struggling to keep pace. The primary bottleneck is feedstock availability. First-generation SAF, derived from vegetable oils and animal fats, is limited by land-use constraints and sustainability concerns. Consequently, the market is shifting toward second-generation fuels made from agricultural residues, municipal waste, and eventually, synthetic e-fuels produced using renewable energy.

Strategic insights suggest that successful scaling requires a multi-pronged approach. Governments must provide stable policy frameworks, such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act’s 45Z tax credit, which incentivizes production. Simultaneously, airlines and fuel producers must forge long-term offtake agreements to de-risk capital-intensive projects. Collaboration is key; no single entity can solve this alone. Supply chain integration, from waste collection to refining and distribution, must be optimized to reduce costs.

Case studies highlight early successes. Delta Air Lines has partnered with multiple suppliers to secure SAF volumes, aiming for 10% blending by 2030. Meanwhile, Neste, a leader in renewable fuels, has expanded its production capacity significantly, demonstrating the scalability of waste-based technologies. Another notable example is the collaboration between KLM and SkyNRG, which has successfully introduced regular SAF flights to passengers, raising awareness and creating market pull.
